Richard and Jennifer
Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of photographing Richard and Jennifer’s wedding at Keele Hall in Staffordshire. I first met this lovely couple and their gorgeous daughter Mya at my studio where they come for a family photo shoot. When they mentioned that they were engaged, I knew they were the perfect couple for me as they wanted relaxed and natural wedding photography that is more about the moments and less about posing for group photos. Here’s what they had to say about their wedding day…
How did you meet?:
Christmas Eve night of 2008. Both Rich and I were out in separate groups and ended up at the same place at the end of the night, but never spoke. Richard recognised me as he knew my mum, and added me on social media on Christmas morning. After some confusion over Richard possibly being the person who drove me home that night (he wasn’t, and I still don’t know how I got home!) there was non stop talking from then on. Six months later we were official!
Tell me your proposal story:
Richard had been teasing me for some time over taking me away for the weekend for my 22nd birthday. When the time came, we got on a train to London and I was so excited at the thought that we may be going to the Harry Potter studios! Once we were there, we came out of the station and later entered another. I didn’t really think much of it because my head is often in the clouds! Rich handed me my passport and announced that we were going to Paris! On the night of my birthday we went for a walk to see the Eiffel Tower after a lovely meal, and Richard proposed just as the tower lit up. After I jokingly said no (bad joke) I of course said yes! And because I got so excited over the Harry Potter studio idea, we went there for my 23rd!
Why did you choose the venue(s) you chose for your wedding day?:
We’d viewed a couple of venues but Keele was the place that we were both happy with straight away. It’s a lovely building and has an old school feel with lovely high ceilings. It’s just beautiful!
What was it you loved about your outfits and accessories that made you choose them?:
When you’re looking for a dress, you have a style in mind. For me, I really thought that I’d get an A-Line dress but I ended up with something completely different to what I’d normally choose which added something special for me and for guests being surprised to see me wearing it. It was princess style, with a hoop under the skirt and everything! But being plain lace all over kept the simplicity that I like. Accessories were kept simple too. Small chains and single pearl detail.
For Richard, he chose dark grey and then a sage green to match our colours. He wanted to be different to the groomsmen and to capture something that matched his bride to be, so whilst the groomsmen wore grey suits with grey waistcoats, green ties and pale pink button holes to match bridesmaids, Richard wore a grey tartan waistcoat with ivory tie and a white button hole matching one of the flowers in my bouquet.
Tell me about the theme/styling of your wedding:
Richard and I chose Spring colours of pastel greens, pinks and ivory to match the season that we were getting married in. And as our married name is Bird, we took that and used vintage birdcages filled with flowers. The theme was literally our surname!
What was your first dance and why did you choose it?:
For our first dance, we wanted something unique and different. You hear of people getting married and their first dance song is quite common, or over played. We chose an old classic with a modern twist. Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling In Love, sang by Haley Reinhart.
What were the most special/memorable moments of the day for you?
The special and most memorable moments for would be after the ceremony when Richard and I could relax and spend time with our daughter. Richard and I went for a walk together away from guests too, which I think I’ll remember clearly for a long time. A funnier memory would be the taxi driver not knowing where to take us at the end of the night and ended up dropping us at a country lane! We were wandering around, me in my big dress and heels and Richard in his suit in the pitch black trying to find our accommodation after having had one too many drinks, there was a lot of laughing!
Why did you choose Bib & Tucker as your photographer, and what was your experience of your photography on the day?:
We chose Bib & Tucker because their work really caught our eye. It’s so natural and relaxing which was really important to us, we wanted to enjoy our photos and not find them a chore which I hear many people do when forced to look at a camera for hours on end! Our experience with them was fantastic and they’re so down to earth and fun, we had a blast and our photos are something we will always treasure!
What would be your best bit of advice to other couples planning their wedding?:
Don’t get too caught up in making it the perfect day for other people’s benefit, it’s your day! Be sure to spend time away from your guests and the business of the day to be with your husband, or your children. It’s those moments that you’ll remember for the longest.
Are you planning on going on a Honeymoon? If so where are you headed?
We had a mini moon spa break at Hoarcross Hall, a much needed break for a busy Mum and Dad! Later on in the year we had a family holiday to Tenerife which was fantastic.
